Breaking News: Seattle Yachts International Acquires 60-Year-Old Ohio Boat Manufacturer!

Fairport Harbor, Ohio - Peter Whiting, Managing Partner, announced that Seattle Yachts International, is continuing its expansion and vertical integration with the recent acquisition of famed 60-year-old boat manufacturing operation, Tartan-Legacy.

Seattle Yachts has formed a wholly-owned subsidiary, Marine Manufacturing Group LLC (MMG) to purchase the assets of Tartan Legacy Yachts, a manufacturing operation that produces Tartan Sailing YachtsLegacy Downeast Yachts, and AMP® brand carbon fiber masts and spars.

Speaking with candor and obvious pleasure, Whiting explained that Seattle Yachts has been a dealer for both Tartan and Legacy yachts for several years and had a number of boats in the Tartan Legacy production pipeline when it became evident the Ohio-based manufacturer was experiencing financial difficulties.

Said Whiting,"Look, it’s no secret that Tartan-Legacy had fallen onto some hard times of late and was struggling despite having a healthy order book and some nineteen boats in process on the production floor.

We could see that, with some needed recapitalization and the infusion of some heavy-duty boat building management talent, we could restore the brands to their historically strong positions in the market. We also felt that would ultimately be to the benefit of everyone, including current and future customers, other Tartan-Legacy dealers, and, of course, ourselves, who had significant investments at stake, not to mention the 45 some people who work in the operation."

...the Tartan-Legacy manufacturing operation is being moved to a new 52,000 sf facility in Painesville, OH, about five miles from its current location. Although only slightly larger than the current facility, the new plant is, according to Macnab, much better laid out for boat building than what Tartan-Legacy has had for the last ten or so years. And the long-term lease at the new facility assures Tartan and Legacy brands will continue to be built in the heartland of America for a long time to come.

This is exciting news for both Tartan and its new owners. TONE wishes all involved the very best of luck!

To Blazes with the Plague,
It's Time to Plan for Summer Sailing

Tartan Owners Northeast Announces the Summer Plans

TONE is planning three on-the-water events this summer:  A get together at Coecles Harbor, Shelter Island, NY on July 18, the Maine Cruise from July 29 - August 6, and a final get together at Scituate, MA on August 8. As you would expect, all of these plans are contingent on favorable things happening with regard to government rules regarding group activities and the marinas and restaurants being open.  I have read of some plans being floated that would allow venues to open but with strict limits on the crowds, almost like the fire marshal rules in normal times.  Local health departments would establish seating limitations.  Who knows?

The July 18 event will take place at Coecles Harbor Marina and environs.  We are planning to get together at the marina and then use their van to get everybody to one of the local restaurants for a group dinner.  Based on the response to last year's events we shouldn't have much trouble getting a reservation even if social distancing rules of some sort are still in place. Shelter Island is a fun place to visit and the marina loans bikes to guests if you want to explore.  Ice cream places and miniature golf at least.

If you don't want to use the marina moorings there is a great anchorage just to port as you enter the harbor but it is a fair dinghy ride to get to the marina.

The Maine Cruise will formally start in Boothbay Harbor (our usual jumping off point) on July 29 and move on from there.  It would finish in Sebasco Harbor Resort in Casco Bay on August 6.  As we have in the past, we'd pick up people from further south along the way.  If you were harbor hopping there would be opportunity to join up with others as early as Onset at the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal on July 24.

The colors below show the locations where all three float plans converge and all participants would be there at the same time.

The final on-the-water event is at Scituate, MA on August 8.  For those returning from the Maine Cruise this would be on the way home.  We'll arrange for a local restaurant depending on how many express interest and we'll all meet for a dinner.  More to follow, as for all of these plans.

We have established events here at Club Express for all of these summer events.  There will be no cost but we would like people to sign up so that we can plan for harborage and possible restaurant options.

               Winter Dinner 2020

Tartan Owners Northeast held its Winter Dinner on February 22, 2020,
at the Latitude 41º Restaurant at the Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic, CT.

There were cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and social time from 6:00 to 7:00 and then a plated table-seated dinner thereafter.

Fifty TONE members and friends had a wonderful time at the 2020 Winter Dinner.  The bar opened at 6:00 and the upstairs rooms of the Latitude 41º Restaurant quickly filled with old and new TONE members and their friends.

The food at the ensuing dinner was excellent with diners treated to their choice of filet mignon, swordfish, chicken, or a vegetarian main course.  After dinner there were brief remarks from Coast Guard Museum Ambassador Bruce Buckley about the Coast Guard's planned museum in New London and an update on the doings and plans for Tartan at their factory in Ohio.  This is Tartan's 60th anniversary as an independent business and we all hope for some special events to recognize this signal yachting achievement.
The evening was wrapped up with some remarks from current TONE President, Gary Van Voorhis.

It was all in all a typical, great, Winter Dinner.
