Spring 2014 Nor'Easter is Here!
TONE Newsletter

Ayuh, we're fixin' to get ready to go to Maine.  The spring 2014 edition of Nor'Easter, the TONE newsletter, is now on the site and ready for download.  And this baby is a whoppah.

OK, I'll quit the faux Maine accent, but this edition of the newsletter really is something.  The TONE contributors and editorial team have outdone themselves.  This edition has 25 pages of great usable content and news that will get you thinking about pointing your Tartan northward this August.

We've expanded the Safety Corner to include articles on first aid while sailing and navigating in foggy conditions.  Tartan Tech talks about high quality varnishing technique, installing an AIS system, and more.

Your favorite sections like Galley Notes and Tartans at Play are still in the newsletter, as well as news from the Tartan factory and sister clubs.  All in all, a great read.

Check out the summary in the far lower right corner of this home page and click the link to our latest edition.

And after you've finished Nor'Easter, click  back here and sign up to join us for the 2014 New England Cruise.

The full schedule has been approved by the planning committee and is listed below.  The cost for joining up for the cruise has been set at $45.00 per boat and the event is live for registration on the TONE Club Express website right now.

We are planning optional dinners for the group in Padanaram (MA), Manchester (MA), Camden (ME), and Castine (ME).  Each of these will be a separate sub-event that members can choose to attend or not at their discretion.  Prices for these events will be posted as the details for each is finalized.

The Port of Call list is shown below.

Think Maine!  It's just that simple.

Finally we can see green grass poking up and the wretched snow has all melted.  Most of us have uncovered our boats and begun the various spring rituals of readiness.  It's been a horribly long winter in New England and at last we can get ready for the longed for sailing season.

It is a perfect time to take a good look at your late summer calendar and give some thought to joining TONE on its biennial New England Cruise.

This year's cruise focuses on the joy of getting there, versus putting a big port-of-call number on the cruising score card.  Multi-day layovers have been built into the schedule so that sailors who want to stop and smell the roses (or the boiled lobster) have plenty of time to do that.

As always, folks who want to mush on to different harbors will be free to jump on and off the cruise at will.  The schedule lets everybody know where the major meet-ups are, so skippers can plan to wander the waters as the mood suits them.

The New England Cruise will originate in Padanaram Harbor (South Dartmouth, MA) and have the final all hands event at Castine, Maine.  The cruise will begin July 31 and take place over the first two weeks of August, 2014.

Oh Yeah, It Was Good.
The TONE Winter Dinner
Saturday - March 1, 2014
Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT

They came, they drank, they ate, they won fabulous merchandise (sort of), and they sang songs.

The Winter Dinner gave close to fifty TONE revelers a great night.  It was cold outside, but the second floor of the Latitude 41 Restaurant at the Mystic Seaport just glowed with the warmth of fellowship and food.  The evening dinner was actually the continuation of good fun which started with an afternoon tour of the Seaport guided by members of TONE's Board and other volunteers.

(You can see a slideshow of photos taken by Matt Bud outside during the tour, and inside at the much warmer and cozier dinner, in the lower left corner of this home page.)

At 5:00 P.M the bar opened and the TONE winter faithful mingled and ate hors d'oeuvres while reviewing the many items brought by attendees to raffle off at the first Flotsam & Jetsam event.  Members brought along useable items they no longer wanted but were willing to donate to TONE.  Dinghy davits, a huge white fender, an antique Navy stadimeter, and all manner of loot was displayed on the floor and tables about the room.  Members bought raffle tickets and dropped them in containers in front of whichever item they wanted to compete for.  You could quickly discern the most contested items by the number of tickets in their bowls!

At 6:00 the crowd decamped to the dining room next door, listened to few encouraging words from event organizer Matt Bud (many thanks Matt!) and TONE President, Alan Benet.  Attendees introduced themselves in round table fashion as the waitstaff put out garden salads and an end-of-room projector flashed colorful slides of prior TONE events.

Fabulous dinners were served at 6:30 where the member's first challenge was to remember which entree had been ordered at sign-up.  After you passed that test a wonderful steak, salmon, or shitake mushroom was put in front of you and the feasting began.

At the end of the supper a number of TONE logo Land's End shirts were awarded to attendees who had come the furthest, come the shortest distance, been married the shortest, could figure out the lat/lon for the restaurant, and a couple of other zany categories.  The winners of the Flotsam & Jetsam raffle were announced and then the Shanty Singers were introduced.

The group spent their last hour together signing along with the great Mystic Seaport Shanty Singers and learning about the origin and meaning of some familiar and not so familiar sea-going songs.

As the event wound down at about 9:00 folks headed out with a fresh dose of sailing to tide them over until winter lets go its icy grip.  More than a few people kept the warm spirit going by meeting up at the downstairs bar or local hotels.  It was a great night.

The next major TONE event is the 2014 New England Cruise.  This event will provide a framework for interested members to join together for sailing adventures that start in southern New England and eventually reach Castine, Maine.  The dates and ports have been set; see below to get the latest breaking information on the Great 2014 New England Cruise!
