TONE hosts SAR Seminar at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy

More than forty TONE members convened in Yeaton Hall on the campus of the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, March 5, 2016 to refresh their skills about what to do if there is an incident aboard.  The Search and Rescue (SAR) Seminar was billed as a chance for experienced skippers and their crew members to consider best practices if a debilitating accident or incident were to happen while aboard ship.

Commander Bruce Buckley of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Lt. Daniel Tavernier of the USCG led the session. Commander Buckley facilitated the initial part of the session which provided a brief history of the Coast Guard, moved to general good safety at sea practices, and then reviewed Suddenly in Command issues.  Lt. Tavernier gave the crowd a glimpse of how the Coast Guard responds when a distress call is received starting with the standard data form that the CG completes upon receipt of a call and moving to drawing for the audience different search patterns ships and plans use to locate a missing person.

The seminar is part of a TONE initiated initiative to provide more educational opportunities to members in the area of safety and sea and rules of the road.  The live session was a good compliment to the ongoing series of articles in Nor'easter, the TONE newsletter, addressing these issues.  Commander Buckley has accepted an offer to write a regular series of articles in the Nor'easter on subjects related to seagoing safety.

Members enjoyed the lively session, asking many questions and participating fully in the class.  The class session was followed by a lunch in the Academy's All Hands Mess and a tour of the campus and its Coast Guard Museum.

The morning's activities set the stage for a wonderful winter dinner that followed at the Inn at Mystic.

Winter Dinner Sets the Stage for a Great 2016
Inn at Mystic hosts the TONE Winter Dinner.

A record total of 63 TONE members (and more than a few non-members checking things out) attended a stellar Winter Dinner on Saturday evening, March 5, 2016. The Inn at Mystic's historic Haley Mansion was the beautiful location for before dinner drinks and a great buffet dinner that followed.
